Principal Feast
Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of
the deaf unstopped; then the lame shall leap like a deer,
and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters
shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the
desert; the burning sand shall become a pool, and the
thirsty ground springs of water; the haunt of jackals shall
become a swamp, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. A
highway shall be there, and it shall be called the Holy Way;
the unclean shall not travel on it, but it shall be for
God's people; no traveler, not even fools, shall go astray.
No lion shall be there, nor shall any ravenous beast come up
on it; they shall not be found there, but the redeemed shall
walk there.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of
witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin
that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the
race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and
perfecter of our faith, who for the sake of the joy that was
set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame,
and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of
God.
Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these,
robed in white, and where have they come from?" I said to
him, "Sir, you are the one that knows." Then he said to me,
"These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they
have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of
the Lamb. For this reason they are before the throne of God,
and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one
who is seated on the throne will shelter them. They will
hunger no more, and thirst no more; the sun will not strike
them, nor any scorching heat; for the Lamb at the center of
the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to
springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every
tear from their eyes."
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom
of heaven. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be
comforted. "Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the
earth. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for
righteousness, for they will be filled. "Blessed are the
merciful, for they will receive mercy. "Blessed are the pure
in heart, for they will see God. "Blessed are the
peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness'
sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you
when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds
of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be
glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same
way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have
waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the LORD
for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his
salvation.
When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her
also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply
moved. He said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him,
"Lord, come and see." Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said,
"See how he loved him!" But some of them said, "Could not he
who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from
dying?" Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the
tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus
said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead
man, said to him, "Lord, already there is a stench because
he has been dead four days." Jesus said to her, "Did I not
tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of
God?" So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward
and said, "Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew
that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake
of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that
you sent me." When he had said this, he cried with a loud
voice, "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, his hands
and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in
a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."
As for me, Daniel, my spirit was troubled within me, and the
visions of my head terrified me. I approached one of the
attendants to ask him the truth concerning all this. So he
said that he would disclose to me the interpretation of the
matter: "As for these four great beasts, four kings shall
arise out of the earth. But the holy ones of the Most High
shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom
forever--forever and ever."
I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love
toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to
give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray
that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory,
may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come
to know him, so that, with the eyes of your heart
enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has
called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance
among the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of
his power for us who believe, according to the working of
his great power. God put this power to work in Christ when
he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand
in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and
power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not
only in this age but also in the age to come. And he has put
all things under his feet and has made him the head over all
things for the church, which is his body, the fullness of
him who fills all in all.
"But I say to you that listen, Love your enemies, do good to
those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for
those who abuse you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek,
offer the other also; and from anyone who takes away your
coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who
begs from you; and if anyone takes away your goods, do not
ask for them again. Do to others as you would have them do
to you."
We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed,
but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken;
struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body
the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be
made visible in our bodies. For while we live, we are always
being given up to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of
Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. So death is
at work in us, but life in you.
Rejoice and be
glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same
way they persecuted the prophets who were before you."
Luke 9:18-27
Once when Jesus was praying alone, with only the disciples
near him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say that I am?"
They answered, "John the Baptist; but others, Elijah; and
still others, that one of the ancient prophets has arisen."
He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter
answered, "The Messiah of God." He sternly ordered and
commanded them not to tell anyone, saying, "The Son of Man
must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders,
chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and on the third
day be raised." Then he said to them all, "If any want to
become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up
their cross daily and follow me. For those who want to save
their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for
my sake will save it. What does it profit them if they gain
the whole world, but lose or forfeit themselves? Those who
are ashamed of me and of my words, of them the Son of Man
will be ashamed when he comes in his glory and the glory of
the Father and of the holy angels. But truly I tell you,
there are some standing here who will not taste death before
they see the kingdom of God."

Psalms 148, 150
Isaiah 65:17-25
For I am about to create new heavens and a new earth; the
former things shall not be remembered or come to mind. But
be glad and rejoice forever in what I am creating; for I am
about to create Jerusalem as a joy, and its people as a
delight. I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and delight in my
people; no more shall the sound of weeping be heard in it,
or the cry of distress. No more shall there be in it an
infant that lives but a few days, or an old person who does
not live out a lifetime; for one who dies at a hundred years
will be considered a youth, and one who falls short of a
hundred will be considered accursed. They shall build houses
and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their
fruit. They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall
not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall
the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the
work of their hands. They shall not labor in vain, or bear
children for calamity; for they shall be offspring blessed
by the LORD-- and their descendants as well. Before they
call I will answer, while they are yet speaking I will hear.
The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, the lion shall
eat straw like the ox; but the serpent--its food shall be
dust! They shall not hurt or destroy on all my holy
mountain, says the LORD.
Hebrews 11:32-12:2
And what more should I say? For time would fail me to tell
of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and
the prophets-- who through faith conquered kingdoms,
administered justice, obtained promises, shut the mouths of
lions, quenched raging fire, escaped the edge of the sword,
won strength out of weakness, became mighty in war, put
foreign armies to flight. Women received their dead by
resurrection. Others were tortured, refusing to accept
release, in order to obtain a better resurrection. Others
suffered mocking and flogging, and even chains and
imprisonment. They were stoned to death, they were sawn in
two, they were killed by the sword; they went about in skins
of sheep and goats, destitute, persecuted, tormented-- of
whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and
mountains, and in caves and holes in the ground. Yet all
these, though they were commended for their faith, did not
receive what was promised, since God had provided something
better so that they would not, apart from us, be made
perfect.

Year A
Revelation 7:9-17
After this I looked, and there was a great multitude that no
one could count, from every nation, from all tribes and
peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before
the Lamb, robed in white, with palm branches in their hands.
They cried out in a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs
to our God who is seated on the throne, and to the Lamb!"
And all the angels stood around the throne and around the
elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their
faces before the throne and worshiped God, singing, "Amen!
Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and
power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen."
Psalm 34:1-10
1 John 3:1-3
See what love the Father has given us, that we should be
called children of God; and that is what we are. The reason
the world does not know us is that it did not know him.
Beloved, we are God's children now; what we will be has not
yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when he is
revealed, we will be like him, for we will see him as he is.
And all who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as
he is pure.
Matthew 5:1-12
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and
after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began
to speak, and taught them, saying:

Isaiah 25:6-9
On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples
a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich
food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear.
And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast
over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations;
he will swallow up death forever. Then the Lord GOD will
wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his
people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD
has spoken.
Psalm 24:1-6
Revelation 21:1-6a
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first
heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was
no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming
down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for
her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne
saying, "See, the home of God is among mortals. He will
dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and
God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from
their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and
pain will be no more, for the first things have passed
away." And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See,
I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this, for
these words are trustworthy and true." Then he said to me,
"It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and
the end."
John 11:32-44
When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his
feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my
brother would not have died."
Year C
Daniel 7:1-3,15-18
In the first year of King Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had
a dream and visions of his head as he lay in bed. Then he
wrote down the dream: I, Daniel, saw in my vision by night
the four winds of heaven stirring up the great sea, and four
great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one
another.
Psalm 149
Ephesians 1:11-23
In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been
destined according to the purpose of him who accomplishes
all things according to his counsel and will, so that we,
who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for
the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you had heard
the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had
believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised
Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward
redemption as God's own people, to the praise of his glory.
Luke 6:20-31
Then he looked up at his disciples and said: "Blessed are
you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. "Blessed
are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. "Blessed
are you who weep now, for you will laugh. "Blessed are you
when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you,
and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that
day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in
heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the
prophets. "But woe to you who are rich, for you have
received your consolation. "Woe to you who are full now, for
you will be hungry. "Woe to you who are laughing now, for
you will mourn and weep. "Woe to you when all speak well of
you, for that is what their ancestors did to the false
prophets.

Jeremiah 31:31-34
The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make
a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of
Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with
their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them
out of the land of Egypt--a covenant that they broke, though
I was their husband, says the LORD. But this is the covenant
that I will make with the house of Israel after those days,
says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will
write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they
shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another,
or say to each other, "Know the LORD," for they shall all
know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the
LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their
sin no more.
2 Corinthians 4:5-12
For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ
as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus' sake. For it
is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who
has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge
of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have
this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear
that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not
come from us.

Psalm 145
Isaiah 66:20-23
They shall bring all your kindred from all the nations as an
offering to the LORD, on horses, and in chariots, and in
litters, and on mules, and on dromedaries, to my holy
mountain Jerusalem, says the LORD, just as the Israelites
bring a grain offering in a clean vessel to the house of the
LORD. And I will also take some of them as priests and as
Levites, says the LORD. For as the new heavens and the new
earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, says the
LORD; so shall your descendants and your name remain. From
new moon to new moon, and from sabbath to sabbath, all flesh
shall come to worship before me, says the LORD.
Colossians 1:9-14
For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not
ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled
with the knowledge of God's will in all spiritual wisdom and
understanding, so that you may lead lives worthy of the
Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good
work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. May you be
made strong with all the strength that comes from his
glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything
with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father,
who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the
saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of
darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved
Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Isaiah 56:3-8
Do not let the foreigner joined to the LORD say, "The LORD
will surely separate me from his people"; and do not let the
eunuch say, "I am just a dry tree." For thus says the LORD:
To the eunuchs who keep my sabbaths, who choose the things
that please me and hold fast my covenant, I will give, in my
house and within my walls, a monument and a name better than
sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name
that shall not be cut off. And the foreigners who join
themselves to the LORD, to minister to him, to love the name
of the LORD, and to be his servants, all who keep the
sabbath, and do not profane it, and hold fast my covenant--
these I will bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful
in my house of prayer; their burnt offerings and their
sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house shall
be called a house of prayer for all peoples. Thus says the
Lord GOD, who gathers the outcasts of Israel, I will gather
others to them besides those already gathered.

Hebrews 12:18-24
You have not come to something that can be touched, a
blazing fire, and darkness, and gloom, and a tempest, and
the sound of a trumpet, and a voice whose words made the
hearers beg that not another word be spoken to them. (For
they could not endure the order that was given, "If even an
animal touches the mountain, it shall be stoned to death."
Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, "I
tremble with fear.") But you have come to Mount Zion and to
the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to
innumerable angels in festal gathering, and to the assembly
of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the
judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made
perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and
to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the
blood of Abel.
