Morning Prayer – Form 2

Monday & daily in Pentecost

Either A or B may be used.

A THE PREPARATION

O Lord, open our lips;

And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Blessèd are you, creator God;
to you be glory and praise for ever!
[Your Spirit moved over the face of the waters
to bring light and life to your creation.]
Pour out your Spirit on us this day,
that we may walk as children of light
and by your grace reveal your presence,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit;
Blessèd be God for ever!

The following is said:

God orders all things well:
O come, let us worship.

Or, in Pentecost:

Alleluia! The Spirit of God fills the whole world:
O come, let us worship. Alleluia!

Or, on feasts of Apostles & Evangelists:

(Alleluia!) Christ the corner-stone has built
   his Church upon the apostles and prophets:
O come, let us worship. (Alleluia!)

Or, on feasts of Missionaries:

(Alleluia!) Christ has proclaimed his gospel
   in all lands:
O come, let us worship. (Alleluia!)

Morning Prayer continues with the opening canticle.

OR:

B THE PREPARATION

O Lord, open our lips;
And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Pour your love into our hearts, O God,
Through the Holy Spirit you have given to us.

Glory . . .

Alleluia!

THE OPENING CANTICLE:

A SONG OF GOD’S RIGHTEOUSNESS

If the whole psalm is not recited, either verses 1-7 & 19-end or verses 8-18 may be used.

1 Bless the Lord, O my soul,*
and all that is within me, bless his holy name.
2 Bless the Lord, O my soul,*
and forget not all his benefits.
3 He forgives all your sins*
and heals all your infirmities;
4 He redeems your life from the grave*
and crowns you with mercy and loving-kindness.
5 He satisfies you with good things,*
and your youth is renewed like an eagle’s.
6 The Lord executes righteousness*
and judgement for all who are oppressed.
7 He made his ways known to Moses*
and his works to the children of Israel.
[8 The Lord is full of compassion and mercy,*
slow to anger and of great kindness.
9 He will not always accuse us,*
nor will he keep his anger for ever.
10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins,*
nor rewarded us according to our wickedness.
11 For as the heavens are high above the earth,*
so is his mercy great upon those who fear him.
12 As far as the east is from the west,*
so far has he removed our sins from us.
13 As a father cares for his children,*
so does the Lord care for those who fear him.
14 For he himself knows whereof we are made;*
he remembers that we are but dust.
15 Our days are like the grass;*
we flourish like a flower of the field;
16 When the wind goes over it, it is gone,*
and its place shall know it no more.
17 But the merciful goodness of the Lord
   endures for ever on those who fear him,*
and his righteousness on children’s children;
18 On those who keep his covenant*
and remember his commandments and do them.]
19 The Lord has set his throne in heaven,*
and his kingship has dominion over all.
20 Bless the Lord, you angels of his,
   you mighty ones who do his bidding,*
and hearken to the voice of his word.
21 Bless the Lord, all you his hosts,*
you ministers of his who do his will.
22 Bless the Lord, all you works of his,
   in all places of his dominion;*
bless the Lord, O my soul.
Glory . . . Psalm 103

A HYMN may be sung.

THE OPENING PRAYER may be said.

The night has passed and the day lies open before us;
let us pray with one heart and mind:
(Silence may be kept)

As we rejoice in the gift of this new day,
so may the light of your presence, O God,
set our hearts on fire with love for you;
now and for ever. Amen.

THE WORD OF GOD

THE PSALMODY

Either:

PSALM 119. 33-56

33 Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes,*
and I shall keep it to the end.
34 Give me understanding and I shall keep your law;*
I shall keep it with all my heart.
35 Make me go in the path of your commandments,*
for that is my desire.
36 Incline my heart to your decrees*
and not to unjust gain.
37 Turn my eyes from watching what is worthless;*
give me life in your ways.
38 Fulfil your promise to your servant,*
which you make to those who fear you.
39 Turn away the reproach which I dread,*
because your judgements are good.
40 Behold, I long for your commandments;*
in your righteousness preserve my life.
               *              *              *
41 Let your loving-kindness come to me, O Lord,*
and your salvation, according to your promise.
42 Then shall I have a word for those who taunt me,*
because I trust in your words.
43 Do not take the word of truth out of my mouth,*
for my hope is in your judgements.
44 I shall continue to keep your law;*
I shall keep it for ever and ever.
45 I will walk at liberty,*
because I study your commandments.
46 I will tell of your decrees before kings*
and will not be ashamed.
47 I delight in your commandments,*
which I have always loved.
48 I will lift up my hands to your commandments,*
and I will meditate on your statutes.
               *              *              *
49 Remember your word to your servant,*
because you have given me hope.
50 This is my comfort in my trouble,*
that your promise gives me life.
51 The proud have derided me cruelly,*
but I have not turned from your law.
52 When I remember your judgements of old,*
O Lord, I take great comfort.
53 I am filled with a burning rage,*
because of the wicked who forsake your law.
54 Your statutes have been like songs to me*
wherever I have lived as a stranger.
55 I remember your name in the night, O Lord,*
and dwell upon your law.
56 This is how it has been with me,*
because I have kept your commandments.

Or:

PSALM 123

1 To you I lift up my eyes,*
to you enthroned in the heavens.
2 As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters,*
and the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
3 So our eyes look to the Lord our God,*
until he show us his mercy.
4 Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy,*
for we have had more than enough of contempt,
5 Too much of the scorn of the indolent rich,*
and of the derision of the proud.

PSALM 124

1 If the Lord had not been on our side,*
let Israel now say;
2 If the Lord had not been on our side,*
when enemies rose up against us;
3 Then would they have swallowed us up alive*
in their fierce anger towards us;
4 Then would the waters have overwhelmed us*
and the torrent gone over us;
5 Then would the raging waters*
have gone right over us.
6 Blessèd be the Lord!*
he has not given us over to be a prey for their teeth.
7 We have escaped like a bird
   from the snare of the fowler;*
the snare is broken and we have escaped.
8 Our help is in the name of the Lord,*
the maker of heaven and earth.

Evening Prayer – Form 2

Monday & daily in Pentecost

Either A or B may be used.

A THE BLESSING OF THE LIGHT

A light, which may be the Paschal Candle, is brought in, or a candle may simply be lit. From Easter to Pentecost, the Paschal Candle may be burning in its customary place.

With you, O God, is the well of life
and in your light shall we see light.

The light and peace of Jesus Christ be with you all
And also with you.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God
Who is worthy of all thanksgiving and praise.

Blessèd are you, Sovereign God, our light and our life;
to you be glory and praise for ever!
When we turned away to darkness and chaos,
like a mother you would not forsake us.
You cried out like a woman in labour
and rejoiced to bring forth a new people.
Your living Word brings light out of darkness
and daily your Spirit renews the face of the earth,
bending our wills to the gentle rule of your love,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
Blessèd be God for ever!

While the other candles are lit the following or another suitable hymn may be sung.

A SONG OF THE LIGHT (59)

1 O gladsome light, of the holy glory of the immortal Father,*
heavenly, holy, blessèd Jesus Christ.
2 Now that we have come to the setting of the sun
   and behold the light of evening,*
we praise you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
3 For it is right at all times to worship you
   with voices of praise,*
O Son of God and giver of life:
   therefore all the world glorifies you.

Verses from PSALM 141 may be said:

Let my prayer rise before you as incense,
the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

O Lord, I call to you; come to me quickly;
hear my voice when I cry to you.
Set a watch before my mouth, O Lord,
and guard the door of my lips.

Let my prayer rise before you as incense,
the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

Let not my heart incline to any evil thing;
let me not be occupied in wickedness.
But my eyes are turned to you, Lord God,
in you I take refuge;
do not leave me defenceless.

Let my prayer rise before you as incense,
the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

THE OPENING PRAYER may be said:

As our evening prayer rises before you, O God,
so may your mercy come down upon us
   to cleanse our hearts
and set us free to sing your praise,
now and for ever. Amen.

Evening Prayer continues with the psalmody.

OR:

B THE PREPARATION

Through the Holy Spirit you have given to us.

Glory . . .

Alleluia!

THE OPENING CANTICLE: A SONG OF GOD’S GREATNESS

1 Bless the Lord, O my soul;*
O Lord my God, how excellent is your greatness!
2 You are clothed with majesty and splendour;*
you wrap yourself with light as with a cloak.
3 The sun knows the time of its setting;*
you make darkness that it may be night.
4 O Lord, how manifold are your works!*
in wisdom you have made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
5 You send forth your Spirit and they are created;*
and so you renew the face of the earth.
6 May the glory of the Lord endure for ever;*
may the Lord rejoice in all his works.
7 I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;*
I will praise my God while I have my being.
8 May these words of mine please him;*
I will rejoice in the Lord.
9 Bless the Lord, O my soul.*
O praise the Lord.
Glory . . . From Psalm 104

Or: A SONG OF THE LIGHT, pages 229 & 230, number 59.

A HYMN may be sung.

THE OPENING PRAYER may be said.

As your living Word
   brings light out of darkness, O Lord,
so may your Spirit renew the face of the earth,

THE WORD OF GOD

THE PSALMODY

From PSALM 86

1 Bow down your ear, O Lord, and answer me,*
for I am poor and in misery.
2 Keep watch over my life, for I am faithful;*
save your servant who trusts in you.
3 Be merciful to me, O Lord, for you are my God;*
I call upon you all the day long.
4 Gladden the soul of your servant,*
for to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
5 For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving,*
and great is your love towards all who call upon you.
6 Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer,*
and attend to the voice of my supplications.
7 In the time of my trouble I will call upon you,*
for you will answer me.
8 All nations you have made
   will come and worship you, O Lord,*
and glorify your name.
9 For you are great; you do wondrous things;*
and you alone are God.
10 Teach me your way, O Lord,
   and I will walk in your truth;*
knit my heart to you that I may fear your name.
11 I will thank you, O Lord my God, with all my heart,*
and glorify your name for evermore.
12 You, O Lord, are gracious and full of compassion,*
slow to anger and full of kindness and truth.
13 Turn to me and have mercy upon me;*
give your strength to your servant.

Or (and especially in Pentecost):
I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy. The old shall dream dreams and the young see visions.

Joel 2. 28

Or (and especially on feasts of Apostles & Evangelists or Missionaries):
You are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord.

Ephesians 2. 19-21

THE RESPONSORY may be said.

Into your hands, O Lord,
   I commend my spirit. (Alleluia! Alleluia!)
Into your hands, O Lord,
   I commend my spirit. (Alleluia! Alleluia!)

For you have redeemed me, Lord God of truth.
I commend my spirit. (Or: Alleluia! Alleluia!)

Glory to the Father, and to the Son,
   and to the Holy Spirit:
Into your hands, O Lord,
   I commend my spirit. (Alleluia! Alleluia!)

Keep me as the apple of your eye.
Hide me under the shadow of your wings.

THE GOSPEL CANTICLE: NUNC DIMITTIS (39)

Refrain: Save us,* O Lord, while waking,
and guard us while sleeping,
that awake we may watch with Christ,
and asleep may rest in peace.
Or, in Pentecost:
Alleluia!* The Holy Spirit, the Advocate, alleluia!
shall teach you all things. Alleluia! Alleluia!
Or, on feasts:
Grant us your light, O Lord,*
that the darkness of our hearts being overcome,
we may receive the true light,
even Christ our Saviour.
1 Now, Lord, you let your servant go in peace:*
your word has been fulfilled.
2 My own eyes have seen the salvation*
which you have prepared in the sight of every people;
3 A light to reveal you to the nations*
and the glory of your people Israel.           Luke 2. 29-32
Glory ...

The refrain is repeated by all.

THE PRAYERS

Intercessions and thanksgivings may be offered here, or at any point in this section.

THE COLLECT: one of the following or some other.

Be present, O merciful God,
and protect us through the silent hours of this night,
so that we who are wearied by the changes
   and chances of this fleeting world,
may rest upon your eternal changelessness;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. 6*

Or (and especially in Pentecost):

Come, O Spirit of God,
and make within us your dwelling place and home.
May our darkness be dispelled by your light,
and our troubles calmed by your peace;
may all evil be redeemed by your love,
all pain transformed through the suffering of Christ,
and all dying glorified in his risen life. Amen. 7*

THE LORD’S PRAYER may be said.

[As we come to the ending of the day,
let us pray as our Redeemer has taught us:]

Our Father in heaven, Or Our Father, who art in heaven,

A devotional ANTHEM may be sung here, or after the blessing.

THE BLESSING

In peace, we will lie down and sleep;
For you alone, Lord, make us dwell in safety.

Abide with us, Lord Jesus,
For the night is at hand and the day is now past.

As the night-watch looks for the morning,
So do we look for you, O Christ.

[Come with the dawning of the day
And make yourself known
   in the breaking of the bread.
]

The Lord bless us and watch over us,
the Lord make his face shine upon us
   and be gracious to us,
the Lord look kindly on us and give us peace. Amen.

Or (and especially in Pentecost):

May the Holy Spirit of God bless and sanctify us
so that we may be consecrated in the truth. Amen.
