OREMUS for April 14
O God, make speed to save us;
O Lord, make haste to help us.
Blessed are you, O Lord;
How wonderful the work of your hands!
As a mother tenderly gathers her children
you embraced a people as your own.
When they turned away and rebelled
your love remained steadfast.
>From them you raised up Jesus our Savior, born of Mary,
to be the living bread,
in whom all our hungers are satisfied.
He offered his life for sinners
and with a love stronger than death
he opened wide his arms on the cross.
For these and all your mercies, we praise you:
Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
Blessed be God for ever!
An opening canticle may be sung.
Truly, God is good to Israel,*
to those who are pure in heart.
But as for me, my feet had nearly slipped;*
I had almost tripped and fallen;
Because I envied the proud*
and saw the prosperity of the wicked:
For they suffer no pain,*
and their bodies are sleek and sound;
In the misfortunes of others they have no share;*
they are not afflicted as others are;
Therefore they wear their pride like a necklace*
and wrap their violence about them like a cloak.
Their iniquity comes from gross minds,*
and their hearts overflow with wicked thoughts.
They scoff and speak maliciously;*
out of their haughtiness they plan oppression.
They set their mouths against the heavens,*
and their evil speech runs through the world.
And so the people turn to them*
and find in them no fault.
They say, 'How should God know?*
is there knowledge in the Most High?'
So then, these are the wicked;*
always at ease, they increase their wealth.
In vain have I kept my heart clean,*
and washed my hands in innocence.
I have been afflicted all day long,*
and punished every morning.
Had I gone on speaking this way,*
I should have betrayed the generation of your children.
When I tried to understand these things,*
it was too hard for me;
Until I entered the sanctuary of God*
and discerned the end of the wicked.
Surely, you set them in slippery places;*
you cast them down in ruin.
O how suddenly do they come to destruction,*
come to an end and perish from terror!
Like a dream when one awakens, O Lord,*
when you arise you will make their image vanish.
When my mind became embittered,*
I was sorely wounded in my heart.
I was stupid and had no understanding;*
I was like a brute beast in your presence.
Yet I am always with you;*
you hold me by my right hand.
You will guide me by your counsel,*
and afterwards receive me with glory.
Whom have I in heaven but you?*
and having you I desire nothing upon earth.
Though my flesh and my heart should waste away,*
God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever.
Truly, those who forsake you will perish;*
you destroy all who are unfaithful.
But it is good for me to be near God;*
I have made the Lord God my refuge.
I will speak of all your works*
in the gates of the city of Zion.

O God, why have you utterly cast us off?*
why is your wrath so hot
against the sheep of your pasture?
Remember your congregation that you purchased long ago,*
the tribe you redeemed to be your inheritance,
and Mount Zion where you dwell.
Turn your steps towards the endless ruins;*
the enemy has laid waste everything in your sanctuary.
Your adversaries roared in your holy place;*
they set up their banners as tokens of victory.
They were like men coming up with axes
to a grove of trees;*
they broke down all your carved work
with hatchets and hammers.
They set fire to your holy place;*
they defiled the dwellingplace of your name
and razed it to the ground.
They said to themselves, 'Let us destroy them altogether.'*
They burned down all the meetingplaces of God
in the land.
There are no signs for us to see;
there is no prophet left;*
there is not one among us who knows how long.
How long, O God, will the adversary scoff?*
will the enemy blaspheme your name for ever?
Why do you draw back your hand?*
why is your right hand hidden in your bosom?
Yet God is my king from ancient times,*
victorious in the midst of the earth.
You divided the sea by your might*
and shattered the heads of the dragons upon the waters;
You crushed the heads of Leviathan*
and gave him to the people of the desert for food.
You split open spring and torrent;*
you dried up everflowing rivers.
Yours is the day, yours also the night;*
you established the moon and the sun.
You fixed all the boundaries of the earth;*
you made both summer and winter.
Remember, O Lord, how the enemy scoffed,*
how a foolish people despised your name.
Do not hand over the life of your dove to wild beasts;*
never forget the lives of your poor.
Look upon your covenant;*
the dark places of the earth are haunts of violence.
Let not the oppressed turn away ashamed;*
let the poor and needy praise your name.
Arise, O God, maintain your cause;*
remember how fools revile you all day long.
Forget not the clamour of your adversaries,*
the unending tumult of those who rise up against you.
FIRST READING [Deuteronomy 1.1940]:
Then, just as the Lord our God had ordered us, we set out from Horeb and went through all that great and terrible wilderness that you saw, on the way to the hill country of the Amorites, until we reached Kadesh-barnea. I said to you, 'You have reached the hill country of the Amorites, which the Lord our God is giving us. See, the Lord your God has given the land to you; go up, take possession, as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has promised you; do not fear or be dismayed.'
All of you came to me and said, 'Let us send men ahead of us to explore the land for us and bring back a report to us regarding the route by which we should go up and the cities we will come to.' The plan seemed good to me, and I selected twelve of you, one from each tribe. They set out and went up into the hill country, and when they reached the Valley of Eshcol they spied it out and gathered some of the land's produce, which they brought down to us. They brought back a report to us, and said, 'It is a good land that the Lord our God is giving us.'
But you were unwilling to go up. You rebelled against the command of the Lord your God; you grumbled in your tents and said, 'It is because the Lord hates us that he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to hand us over to the Amorites to destroy us. Where are we heading? Our kindred have made our hearts fail by reporting, "The people are stronger and taller than we are; the cities are large and fortified up to heaven! We actually saw there the offspring of the Anakim!" ' I said to you, 'Have no dread or fear of them. The Lord your God, who goes before you, is the one who will fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your very eyes, and in the wilderness, where you saw how the Lord your God carried you, just as one carries a child, all the way that you travelled until you reached this place. But in spite of this, you have no trust in the Lord your God, who goes before you on the way to seek out a place for you to camp, in fire by night, and in the cloud by day, to show you the route you should take.'
When the Lord heard your words, he was wrathful and swore: 'Not one of thesenot one of this evil generationshall see the good land that I swore to give to your ancestors, except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He shall see it, and to him and to his descendants I will give the land on which he set foot, because of his complete fidelity to the Lord.' Even with me the Lord was angry on your account, saying, 'You also shall not enter there. Joshua son of Nun, your assistant, shall enter there; encourage him, for he is the one who will secure Israel's possession of it. And as for your little ones, who you thought would become booty, your children, who today do not yet know right from wrong, they shall enter there; to them I will give it, and they shall take possession of it. But as for you, journey back into the wilderness, in the direction of the Red Sea.'

Through all the changing scenes of life,
in trouble and in joy,

SECOND READING [Romans 9.118]:
I am speaking the truth in ChristI am not lying; my conscience confirms it by the Holy Spirit I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people, my kindred according to the flesh. They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and from them, according to the flesh, comes the Messiah, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.
It is not as though the word of God had failed. For not all Israelites truly belong to Israel, and not all of Abraham's children are his true descendants; but 'It is through Isaac that descendants shall be named after you.' This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as descendants. For this is what the promise said, 'About this time I will return and Sarah shall have a son.' Nor is that all; something similar happened to Rebecca when she had conceived children by one husband, our ancestor Isaac. Even before they had been born or had done anything good or bad (so that God's purpose of election might continue, not by works but by his call) she was told, 'The elder shall serve the younger.' As it is written,
'I have loved Jacob,
but I have hated Esau.'
What then are we to say? Is there injustice on God's part? By no means! For he says to Moses,
'I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,
and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.'
So it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God who shows mercy. For the scripture says to Pharaoh, 'I have raised you up for the very purpose of showing my power in you, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth.' So then he has mercy on whomsoever he chooses, and he hardens the heart of whomsoever he chooses.

With faith and love and in union with Christ,
let us offer our prayer before the throne of grace.
Have mercy on your people,
for whom your Son laid down his life.
We pray especially for
Lord, graciously hear us.
Bring healing and wholeness to people and nations,
and have pity on those torn apart by division.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Strengthen all who are persecuted for your name's sake,
and deliver them from evil.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Look in mercy upon all who suffer,
and hear those who cry out in pain and desolation.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Bring comfort to the dying,
and gladden their hearts with the power of your glory.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Give rest to the departed and bring them, with your saints,
to glory everlasting.
Lord, graciously hear us.
As we rejoice in the triumph of the cross,
we pray that the whole of creation may find fulfilment
in the eternal kingdom of God:
Righteous God, holy Redeemer,
renew your broken people with your Holy Spirit,
give them a vision of the coming dawn
and the courage to walk your narrow way,
that they may be a sign of hope to the needy
and proclaim the gracious name
of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Trusting in the compassion of God,
let us pray as our Savior taught us:

Christ crucified draw us to himself,
to find in him a sure ground for faith,
a firm support for hope,
and the assurance of sins forgiven. Amen.
