O Lord, open our lips.
And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
Blessed are you, God of our salvation,
we falter before the demands of your word
and turn away from your call to life.
Yet you pour out your mercy on us
as you showed mercy to your people of old,
that we may turn from our sinfulness
and walk the path of self-emptying love
made known in Jesus Christ.
For these and all your mercies, we praise you:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:
Blessed be God for ever!

Lord, remember David*
and all the hardships he endured;
How he swore an oath to the Lord*
and vowed a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:
'I will not come under the roof of my house,*
nor climb up into my bed;
'I will not allow my eyes to sleep,*
nor let my eyelids slumber;
'Until I find a place for the Lord,*
a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.'
'The Ark! We heard it was in Ephrathah;*
we found it in the fields of Jearim.
'Let us go to God's dwelling place;*
let us fall upon our knees before his footstool.'
Arise, O Lord, into your restingplace,*
you and the ark of your strength.
Let your priests be clothed with righteousness;*

O how good and pleasant it is,*
when a family lives together in unity!
It is like fine oil upon the head*
that runs down upon the beard,
Upon the beard of Aaron,*
and runs down upon the collar of his robe.
It is like the dew of Hermon*
that falls upon the hills of Zion.
For there the Lord has ordained the blessing:*
life for evermore.
Behold now, bless the Lord,
all you servants of the Lord,*
you that stand by night in the house of the Lord.
Lift up your hands in the holy place
and bless the Lord;*
the Lord who made heaven and earth
bless you out of Zion.
FIRST READING [1 Kings 12:12-20]:
So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king had said, 'Come to me again on the third day.' The king answered the people harshly. He disregarded the advice that the older men had given him and spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, 'My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with scorpions.' So the king did not listen to the people, because it was a turn of affairs brought about by the Lord that he might fulfil his word, which the Lord had spoken by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.
When all Israel saw that the king would not listen to them, the people answered the king, 'What share do we have in David? We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, O David.' So Israel went away to their tents. But Rehoboam reigned over the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah. When King Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was taskmaster over the forced labour, all Israel stoned him to death. King Rehoboam then hurriedly mounted his chariot to flee to Jerusalem. So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.
When all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. There was no one who followed the house of David, except the tribe of Judah alone.

With joy we contemplate the grace
of our high priest above;
his heart is made of tenderness,
and overflows with love.
Touched with a sympathy within,
our frailty he has known;
he knows what fierce temptations mean,

while Satan's worst assaults he bore
and did resist to blood.

SECOND READING [Matt. 12:14-30]:
But the Pharisees went out and conspired against him, how to destroy him.
When Jesus became aware of this, he departed. Many crowds followed him, and he cured all of them, and he ordered them not to make him known. This was to fulfil what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 'Here is my servant, whom I have chosen, my beloved, with whom my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles. He will not wrangle or cry aloud, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets. He will not break a bruised reed or quench a smouldering wick until he brings justice to victory. And in his name the Gentiles will hope.'
Then they brought to him a demoniac who was blind and mute; and he cured him, so that the one who had been mute could speak and see. All the crowds were amazed and said, 'Can this be the Son of David?' But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, 'It is only by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons, that this fellow casts out the demons.' He knew what they were thinking and said to them, 'Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand? If I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your own exorcists cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come to you. Or how can one enter a strong man's house and plunder his property, without first tying up the strong man? Then indeed the house can be plundered. Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
