Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord,
and let light perpetual shine upon them.
Blessed are you, O God,
for your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord,
who desired that his Virgin Mother and all the saints
should be sharers with him in his passion,
so that where he has gone before,
as head of the mystical body,
there also the members, given life by him,
should follow in his glory.
Thus we have the sure and joyful hope
of the inheritance of eternal life
given to us by your Son.
For these and all your mercies, we praise you,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit:
Blessed be God for ever!
An opening canticle may be sung.
I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with my whole heart;*
I will tell of all your marvellous works.
I will be glad and rejoice in you;*
I will sing to your name, O Most High.
When my enemies are driven back,*
they will stumble and perish at your presence.
For you have maintained my right and my cause;*
you sit upon your throne judging right.
You have rebuked the ungodly and destroyed the wicked;*
you have blotted out their name for ever and ever.
As for the enemy, they are finished, in perpetual ruin,*
their cities ploughed under,
the memory of them perished;
But the Lord is enthroned for ever;*
he has set up his throne for judgement.
It is he who rules the world with righteousness;*
he judges the peoples with equity.
The Lord will be a refuge for the oppressed,*
a refuge in time of trouble.
Those who know your name will put their trust in you,*
for you never forsake those who seek you, O Lord.
Sing praise to the Lord who dwells in Zion;*
proclaim to the peoples the things he has done.
The avenger of blood will remember them;*
he will not forget the cry of the afflicted.
Have pity on me, O Lord;*
see the misery I suffer from those who hate me,
O you who lift me up from the gate of death;
So that I may tell of all your praises
and rejoice in your salvation*
in the gates of the city of Zion.
The ungodly have fallen into the pit they dug,*
and in the snare they set is their own foot caught.
The Lord is known by his acts of justice;*
the wicked are trapped in the works of their own hands.
The wicked shall be given over to the grave,*
and also all the peoples that forget God.
For the needy shall not always be forgotten,*
and the hope of the poor shall not perish for ever.
Rise up, O Lord,
let not the ungodly have the upper hand;*
let them be judged before you.
Put fear upon them, O Lord;*
let the ungodly know they are but mortal.
Why do you stand so far off, O Lord,*
and hide yourself in time of trouble?
The wicked arrogantly persecute the poor,*
but they are trapped in the schemes they have devised.
The wicked boast of their heart's desire;*
the covetous curse and revile the Lord.
The wicked are so proud that they care not for God;*
their only thought is, 'God does not matter.'
Their ways are devious at all times;
your judgements are far above out of their sight;*
they defy all their enemies.
They say in their heart, 'I shall not be shaken;*
no harm shall happen to me ever.'
Their mouth is full of cursing, deceit and oppression;*
under their tongue are mischief and wrong.
They lurk in ambush in public squares
and in secret places they murder the innocent;*
they spy out the helpless.
They lie in wait, like a lion in a covert;
they lie in wait to seize upon the lowly;*
they seize the lowly and drag them away in their net.
The innocent are broken and humbled before them;*
the helpless fall before their power.
They say in their heart, 'God has forgotten;*
he hides his face; he will never notice.'
Rise up, O Lord;
lift up your hand, O God;*
do not forget the afflicted.
Why should the wicked revile God?*
why should they say in their heart, 'You do not care'?
Surely, you behold trouble and misery;*
you see it and take it into your own hand.
The helpless commit themselves to you,*
for you are the helper of orphans.
Break the power of the wicked and evil;*
search out their wickedness until you find none.
The Lord is king for ever and ever;*
the ungodly shall perish from his land.
The Lord will hear the desire of the humble;*
you will strengthen their heart and your ears shall hear;
To give justice to the orphan and oppressed,*
so that mere mortals may strike terror no more.
In the Lord have I taken refuge;*
how then can you say to me,
'Fly away like a bird to the hilltop;
'For see how the wicked bend the bow
and fit their arrows to the string,*
to shoot from ambush at the true of heart.
'When the foundations are being destroyed,*
what can the righteous do?'
The Lord is in his holy temple;*
the Lord's throne is in heaven.
His eyes behold the inhabited world;*
his piercing eye weighs our worth.
The Lord weighs the righteous as well as the wicked,*
but those who delight in violence he abhors.
Upon the wicked he shall rain coals of fire
and burning sulphur;*
a scorching wind shall be their lot.
For the Lord is righteous;
he delights in righteous deeds;*
and the just shall see his face.
FIRST READING [Job 11:120]:
Then Zophar the Naamathite answered:
'Should a multitude of words go unanswered,
and should one full of talk be vindicated?
Should your babble put others to silence,
and when you mock, shall no one shame you?
For you say, My conduct is pure,
and I am clean in God's sight.
But O that God would speak,
and open his lips to you,
and that he would tell you the secrets of wisdom!
For wisdom is many-sided.
Know then that God exacts of you less than your guilt deserves.
'Can you find out the deep things of God?
Can you find out the limit of the Almighty?
It is higher than heavenwhat can you do?
Deeper than Sheolwhat can you know?
Its measure is longer than the earth,
and broader than the sea.
If he passes through, and imprisons,
and assembles for judgement, who can hinder him?
For he knows those who are worthless;
when he sees iniquity, will he not consider it?
But a stupid person will get understanding,
when a wild ass is born human.
'If you direct your heart rightly,
you will stretch out your hands towards him.
If iniquity is in your hand, put it far away,
and do not let wickedness reside in your tents.
Surely then you will lift up your face without blemish;
you will be secure, and will not fear.
You will forget your misery;
you will remember it as waters that have passed away.
And your life will be brighter than the noonday;
its darkness will be like the morning.
And you will have confidence, because there is hope;
you will be protected and take your rest in safety.
You will lie down, and no one will make you afraid;
many will entreat your favour.
But the eyes of the wicked will fail;
all way of escape will be lost to them,
and their hope is to breathe their last.'

When he entered the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said, 'By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?' Jesus said to them, 'I will also ask you one question; if you tell me the answer, then I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?' And they argued with one another, 'If we say, "From heaven", he will say to us, "Why then did you not believe him?" But if we say, "Of human origin", we are afraid of the crowd; for all regard John as a prophet.' So they answered Jesus, 'We do not know.' And he said to them, 'Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
'What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, "Son, go and work in the vineyard today." He answered, "I will not"; but later he changed his mind and went. The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, "I go, sir"; but he did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?' They said, 'The first.' Jesus said to them, 'Truly I tell you, the tax-collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax-collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him.
'Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a watch-tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went to another country. When the harvest time had come, he sent his slaves to the tenants to collect his produce. But the tenants seized his slaves and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other slaves, more than the first; and they treated them in the same way. Finally he sent his son to them, saying, "They will respect my son." But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, "This is the heir; come, let us kill him and get his inheritance." So they seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. Now when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?' They said to him, 'He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the harvest time.'
Jesus said to them, 'Have you never read in the scriptures: "The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord's doing, and it is amazing in our eyes"? Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom. The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.'
When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard his parables, they realized that he was speaking about them. They wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowds, because they regarded him as a prophet.

we acknowledge the uncertainty of our life on earth.
We are given a mere handful of days,
and our span of life seems nothing in your sight.
All flesh is as grass;
and all its beauty is like the flower of the field.
The grass withers, the flower fades;
but your word will stand forever.
In this our hope,
for you are our God.
Even in the valley of the shadow of death,
you are with us.
O Lord, let us know our end
and the number of our days,
that we may learn how fleeting life is.
Turn your ear to our cry, and hear our prayer.
Do not be silent at our tears,
for we live as strangers before you,
wandering pilgrims as all our ancestors were.
But you are the same
and your years shall have no end. Amen.
Eternal God, our maker and redeemer,
grant us, with all the faithful departed,
the sure benefits of your Son's saving passion
and glorious resurrection
that, in the last day,
when you gather up all things in Christ,
we may with them enjoy the fullness of your promises;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

we pray as our Savior has taught us:

God of all consolation,
in your unending love and mercy
you turn the darkness of death
into the dawn of new life.
Show compassion to your people in their sorrow.

to lift us from the darkness of grief
to the peace and light of your presence.
Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
by dying for us, conquered death
and by rising again, restored life.
May we then go forward eagerly to meet him,
and after our life on earth
be reunited with our brothers and sisters
where every tear will be wiped away.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

where sorrow and pain are no more;
neither sighing but life everlasting.
Thou only art immortal, the creator and maker of man:
and we are mortal formed from the dust of the earth,
and unto earth shall we return:
