O Lord, open our lips.
And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
Blessed are you, Faithful God,
shaper of goodness and beauty out of the shadows of chaos.
You gladdened the soul of all creation
with stunning sunsets, clear-streamed valleys,
mountains towering into the sky.
These gifts, as well as your hopes and dreams, were for us,
but we sent them away into the wilderness of forgetfulness,
choosing to live in the long days of rebellion.
Seeking to unite us with you once more,
you sent Jesus, to baptize us with your life,
even as he was baptized into death for us.
For these and all your mercies, we praise you,
Blessed be God for ever!

When Israel came out of Egypt,*
the house of Jacob from a people of strange speech,
Judah became God's sanctuary*
and Israel his dominion.
The sea beheld it and fled;*
Jordan turned and went back.
The mountains skipped like rams,*

What ailed you, O sea, that you fled?*
O Jordan, that you turned back?

Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,*

and so are all who put their trust in them.
O Israel, trust in the Lord;*
he is their help and their shield.

The Lord has been mindful of us and he will bless us;*
he will bless the house of Israel;
he will bless the house of Aaron;
He will bless those who fear the Lord,*
both small and great together.
May the Lord increase you more and more,*
you and your children after you.
May you be blessed by the Lord,*
the maker of heaven and earth.
The heaven of heavens is the Lord's,*
but he entrusted the earth to its peoples.
The dead do not praise the Lord,*
nor all those who go down into silence;
But we will bless the Lord,*
from this time forth for evermore.
FIRST READING [Judges 6:1, 11-16, 33-35]:
The Israelites did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord gave them into the hand of Midian for seven years.
Now the angel of the Lord came and sat under the oak at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, as his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the wine press, to hide it from the Midianites. The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him, 'The Lord is with you, you mighty warrior.' Gideon answered him, 'But sir, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us? And where are all his wonderful deeds that our ancestors recounted to us, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt? But now the Lord has cast us off, and given us into the hand of Midian.' Then the Lord turned to him and said, 'Go in this might of yours and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian; I hereby commission you.' He responded, 'But sir, how can I deliver Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.' The Lord said to him, 'But I will be with you, and you shall strike down the Midianites, every one of them.'
Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the east came together, and crossing the Jordan they encamped in the Valley of Jezreel. But the spirit of the Lord took possession of Gideon; and he sounded the trumpet, and the Abiezrites were called out to follow him. He sent messengers throughout all Manasseh, and they too were called out to follow him. He also sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali, and they went up to meet them.

There is a land of pure delight,

SECOND READING [Acts 14:19-end]:
But Jews came there from Antioch and Iconium and won over the crowds. Then they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing that he was dead. But when the disciples surrounded him, he got up and went into the city. The next day he went on with Barnabas to Derbe.
After they had proclaimed the good news to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, then on to Iconium and Antioch. There they strengthened the souls of the disciples and encouraged them to continue in the faith, saying, It is through many persecutions that we must enter the kingdom of God. And after they had appointed elders for them in each church, with prayer and fasting they entrusted them to the Lord in whom they had come to believe.
Then they passed through Pisidia and came to Pamphylia. When they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia. From there they sailed back to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work that they had completed. When they arrived, they called the church together and related all that God had done with them, and how he had opened a door of faith for the Gentiles. And they stayed there with the disciples for some time.

Let us pray for our own needs and for the needs of others,
following the pattern which Jesus gave
when he taught us to pray to God our Father.

where machinery is made, and where policy is planned,
