O Lord, open our lips.
And our mouth shall proclaim your praise. nnn
Blessed are you, O God,
on whom our faith rests secure
and whose kingdom we await.
You sustain us by Word and Sacrament
and keep us alert for the coming of the Son of Man,
that we may welcome him without delay.
For these and all your mercies, we praise you:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:
Blessed be God for ever.
An opening canticle may be sung.
O Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger;*
do not punish me in your wrath.
For your arrows have already pierced me,*
and your hand presses hard upon me.
There is no health in my flesh,
because of your indignation;*
there is no soundness in my body, because of my sin.
For my iniquities overwhelm me;*
like a heavy burden they are too much for me to bear.
My wounds stink and fester*
by reason of my foolishness.
I am utterly bowed down and prostrate;*
I go about in mourning all the day long.
My loins are filled with searing pain;*
there is no health in my body.
I am utterly numb and crushed;*
I wail, because of the groaning of my heart.
O Lord, you know all my desires,*
and my sighing is not hidden from you.
My heart is pounding, my strength has failed me,*
and the brightness of my eyes is gone from me.
My friends and companions draw back from my affliction;*
my neighbours stand afar off.
Those who seek after my life lay snares for me;*
those who strive to hurt me speak of my ruin
and plot treachery all the day long.
But I am like the deaf who do not hear,*
like those who are mute and do not open their mouth.
I have become like one who does not hear*
and from whose mouth comes no defence.
For in you, O Lord, have I fixed my hope;*
you will answer me, O Lord my God.
For I said, 'Do not let them rejoice at my expense,*
those who gloat over me when my foot slips.'
Truly, I am on the verge of falling,*
and my pain is always with me.
I will confess my iniquity*
and be sorry for my sin.
Those who are my enemies without cause are mighty,*
and many in number are those who wrongfully hate me.
Those who repay evil for good slander me,*
because I follow the course that is right.
O Lord, do not forsake me;*
be not far from me, O my God.
Make haste to help me,*
O Lord of my salvation.
A Song of Faith (1 Peter 1.3-4,18-21)
Blessed be the God and Father
of our Lord Jesus Christ!
By his great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
Into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled and unfading,
kept in heaven for you.
Who are being protected by the power of God
through faith for a salvation,
ready to be revealed in the last time.
You were ransomed from the futile ways of your ancestors
not with perishable things like silver or gold
But with the precious blood of Christ
like that of a lamb without spot or stain.
Through him you have confidence in God,
who raised him from the dead and gave him glory,
so that your faith and hope are set on God.
How good it is to sing praises to our God!*
how pleasant it is to honour him with praise!
The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem;*
he gathers the exiles of Israel.
He heals the brokenhearted*
and binds up their wounds.
He counts the number of the stars*
and calls them all by their names.
Great is our Lord and mighty in power;*
there is no limit to his wisdom.
The Lord lifts up the lowly,*
but casts the wicked to the ground.
Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;*
make music to our God upon the harp.
He covers the heavens with clouds*
and prepares rain for the earth;
He makes grass to grow upon the mountains*
and green plants to serve us all.
He provides food for flocks and herds*
and for the young ravens when they cry.
He is not impressed by the might of a horse,*
he has no pleasure in human strength;
But the Lord has pleasure in those who fear him,*
in those who await his gracious favour.
FIRST READING [Isaiah 3:1-17]:
For now the Sovereign, the Lord of hosts,
is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah
support and staff
all support of bread,
and all support of water
warrior and soldier,
judge and prophet,
diviner and elder,
captain of fifty
counsellor and skilful magician
and expert enchanter.
And I will make boys their princes,
and babes shall rule over them.
The people will be oppressed,
everyone by another
and everyone by a neighbour;
the youth will be insolent to the elder,
and the base to the honourable.
Someone will even seize a relative,
a member of the clan, saying,
'You have a cloak;
you shall be our leader,
and this heap of ruins
shall be under your rule.'
But the other will cry out on that day, saying,
'I will not be a healer;
in my house there is neither bread nor cloak;
you shall not make me
leader of the people.'
For Jerusalem has stumbled
and Judah has fallen,
because their speech and their deeds are against the Lord,
defying his glorious presence.
The look on their faces bears witness against them;
they proclaim their sin like Sodom,
they do not hide it.
Woe to them!
For they have brought evil on themselves.
Tell the innocent how fortunate they are,
for they shall eat the fruit of their labours.
Woe to the guilty! How unfortunate they are,
for what their hands have done shall be done to them.
My people children are their oppressors,
and women rule over them.
O my people, your leaders mislead you,
and confuse the course of your paths.
The Lord rises to argue his case;
he stands to judge the peoples.
The Lord enters into judgement
with the elders and princes of his people:
It is you who have devoured the vineyard;
the spoil of the poor is in your houses.
What do you mean by crushing my people,
by grinding the face of the poor? says the Lord God of hosts.
The Lord said:
Because the daughters of Zion are haughty
and walk with outstretched necks,
glancing wantonly with their eyes,
mincing along as they go,
tinkling with their feet;
the Lord will afflict with scabs
the heads of the daughters of Zion,
and the Lord will lay bare their secret parts.

We gather together to ask the Lord's blessing;
he chastens and hastens his will to make known;
the wicked oppressing now cease from distressing:
sing praise to his Name, he forgets not his own.
Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
ordaining, maintaining his kingdom divine;
so from the beginning the fight we were winning:
thou, Lord, wast at our side: all glory be thine!
We all do extol thee, thou leader triumphant,
and pray that thou still our defender wilt be.
Let thy congregation escape tribulation:
thy Name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!
SECOND READING :
But recall those earlier days when, after you had been enlightened, you endured a hard
struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to abuse and persecution,
and sometimes being partners with those so treated. For you had compassion for those
who were in prison, and you cheerfully accepted the plundering of your possessions,
knowing that you yourselves possessed something better and more lasting. Do not,
therefore, abandon that confidence of yours; it brings a great reward. For you need
endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was
promised. For yet
'in a very little while,
the one who is coming will come and will not delay;
but my righteous one will live by faith.
My soul takes no pleasure in anyone who shrinks back.'
But we are not among those who shrink back and so are lost, but among those who
have faith and so are saved.

Faithful God, Lord of all,
we offer our prayers to you
for a world in need.
Lord of the Church, we pray for your people throughout the world.
Give unity in the Spirit
that we may be one in the witness of saving love

Head of the Body,
give us wisdom to follow your commandments,
to live peacefully and do justly,
and to walk humbly with you.
hear our prayer.
Creator and ruler of the universe,
give to all who exercise authority
wisdom and virtue to govern justly
and bring peace across the land.

Source of all compassion,
give to all who suffer
the light of your presence and the caring of your people,
to bring calm and comfort.

Giver of good to all,
take from us any evil thought or will
that we may forgive those who offend us or seek our harm

All-knowing One, you who see us as we are
and know us as we should be:
forgive our sins, set us free from fear,
and give us lives abundant with your guiding presence,
that we may be yours for ever,

Gathering our prayers and praises into one,
let us pray as our Savior has taught us.
