O Lord, open our lips.
And our mouth shall proclaim your praise.
Blessed are you, O God,
the giver of every gift that endures.
By the word of your Son,
you challenge our foolishness,
confront our greed,
and shape our lives
to the wisdom of the Gospel.
For these and all your mercies, we praise you:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:
Blessed be God for ever.
An opening canticle may be sung.
In you, O Lord, have I taken refuge;
let me never be put to shame;*
deliver me in your righteousness.
Incline your ear to me;*
make haste to deliver me.
Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe,
for you are my crag and my stronghold;*
for the sake of your name, lead me and guide me.
Take me out of the net
that they have secretly set for me,*
for you are my tower of strength.
Into your hands I commend my spirit,*
for you have redeemed me,
O Lord, O God of truth.
I hate those who cling to worthless idols,*
and I put my trust in the Lord.
I will rejoice and be glad because of your mercy;*
for you have seen my affliction;
you know my distress.
You have not shut me up in the power of the enemy;*
you have set my feet in an open place.

For my life is wasted with grief,
and my years with sighing;*
my strength fails me because of affliction,
and my bones are consumed.
I have become a reproach to all my enemies
and even to my neighbours,
a dismay to those of my acquaintance;*
when they see me in the street they avoid me.
I am forgotten like the dead, out of mind;*
I am as useless as a broken pot.
For I have heard the whispering of the crowd;
fear is all around;*
they put their heads together against me;
they plot to take my life.
But as for me, I have trusted in you, O Lord.*
I have said, 'You are my God.
'My times are in your hand;*
rescue me from the hand of my enemies,
and from those who persecute me.
'Make your face to shine upon your servant,*
and in your loving-kindness save me.'
Lord, let me not be ashamed
for having called upon you;*
rather, let the wicked be put to shame;
let them be silent in the grave.
Let the lying lips be silenced
which speak against the righteous,*
haughtily, disdainfully and with contempt.
How great is your goodness, O Lord,
which you have laid up for those who fear you;*
which you have done in the sight of all
for those who put their trust in you.
You hide them in the covert of your presence
from those who slander them;*
you keep them in your shelter from the strife of tongues.
Blessed be the Lord!*
for he has shown me the wonders of his love
in a besieged city.
Yet I said in my alarm,
'I have been cut off from the sight of your eyes.'*
Nevertheless, you heard the sound of my entreaty
when I cried out to you.
Love the Lord, all you who worship him;*
the Lord protects the faithful,
but repays to the full those who act haughtily.
Be strong and let your heart take courage,*
all you who wait for the Lord.
To you I lift up my eyes,*
to you enthroned in the heavens.
As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters,*
and the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
So our eyes look to the Lord our God,*
until he show us his mercy.
Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy,*
for we have had more than enough of contempt,
Too much of the scorn of the indolent rich,*
and of the derision of the proud.
A Song of Repentance (1 John 1:5-9)
This is the message we have heard from Christ
and proclaim to you:
that God is light,
in whom there is no darkness at all.
If we say that we have fellowship with God
while we walk in darkness,
we lie and do not do what is true.
But if we walk in the light
as God is in the light,
we have fellowship with one another.
And the blood of Jesus, the Son of God,
cleanses us from all our sins.
If we say that we have no sin,
we deceive ourselves
and the truth is not in us.
If we confess our sins,
the One who is faithful and just will forgive us
and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
How good it is to sing praises to our God!*
how pleasant it is to honour him with praise!
The Lord rebuilds Jerusalem;*
he gathers the exiles of Israel.
He heals the brokenhearted*
and binds up their wounds.
He counts the number of the stars*
and calls them all by their names.
Great is our Lord and mighty in power;*
there is no limit to his wisdom.
The Lord lifts up the lowly,*
but casts the wicked to the ground.
Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;*
make music to our God upon the harp.
He covers the heavens with clouds*
and prepares rain for the earth;
He makes grass to grow upon the mountains*
and green plants to serve us all.
He provides food for flocks and herds*
and for the young ravens when they cry.
He is not impressed by the might of a horse,*
he has no pleasure in human strength;
But the Lord has pleasure in those who fear him,*
in those who await his gracious favour.
READING [Luke 5:33-39]:
Then they said to Jesus, 'John's disciples, like the
disciples of the Pharisees, frequently fast and pray, but
your disciples eat and drink.' Jesus said to them, 'You
cannot make wedding-guests fast while the bridegroom is
with them, can you? The days will come when the
bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they
will fast in those days.' He also told them a parable:
'No one tears a piece from a new garment and sews it on
an old garment; otherwise the new will be torn, and the
piece from the new will not match the old. And no one
puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine
will burst the skins and will be spilled, and the skins
will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh
wineskins. And no one after drinking old wine desires new
wine, but says, "The old is good." '

Come to the celebration, all who are hungry,
the best wine is ready, and the loaves of bread;
here he comes, the bridegroom, to welcome the people,
to share out the food and see that all are fed.
Who is invited to the house of the bridegroom,
to live while the dead are left to bury the dead?
Beggars from the roadside, amazed at the asking,
are called to the table where the feast is spread.
What kind of party is this wedding reception?
The first are the last and yet the last are first.
Royal guests of honour are standing and waiting
until all the servants satisfy their thirst.
When shall we come along to share in the feasting?
The day is today, the doors are open wide.
Endless the rejoicing at this celebration -
the Lord is the bridegroom, and his Church the bride.
Come empty-handed when you come to the table;
the drink flows forever, there is ample food.
Taste the wine of heaven and never be thirsty,
and see, as we break the bread, that God is good!
The Benedictus (Morning), the
Magnificat (Evening), or
Nunc dimittis (Night) may follow.
Gracious God and Father,
you have given your Son for us all,
that his death might be our life
and his affliction our peace.
We pray for the suffering...
all who bring sin and suffering to others....
ministries of care and relief....
the Church in all its work, especially
Gracious God and Father, we give you thanks
for the cross of Christ at the heart of creation,
the presence of Christ in our weakness and strength,
the power of Christ to transform our suffering....
for all ministries of healing,
all agencies of relief,
all that sets men free from pain, fear and distress....
for the assurance that your mercy knows no limit,
and for the privilege of sharing
your work of renewal through prayer.
In darkness and in light,
in trouble and in joy,
help us to trust your love, to serve your purpose
and to praise your name;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Sovereign God, enthroned in the heavens,
look upon us with your eyes of mercy
as we look upon you with humility and love
and fill our souls with your peace;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Gathering our prayers and praises into one,
let us pray as our Savior has taught us.
