An Outline Order for The Funeral Service

When . for pastoral reasons, the full funeral service is deemed inappropriate, the following form is used

1. The coffin may be received at the door by the minister, or it may be in place before the congregation assembles.

1. The minister welcomes the people and introduces the service.

1. Sentences of scripture may be sung or said, or a hymn may be sung.

1. Prayers of penitence may be used.

1. One or more passages of Holy Scripture are read. Psalms or hymns may follow the readings.

1 A sermon may be preached and an authorised creed or affirmation of faith may be used.

1 Prayers may be offered including thanksgiving for the life of the departed, prayer for those who mourn and prayer for readiness to live in the light of eternity.

1. Using authorized words, the dead person is commended to God, and the body is committed to its resting place.

1. If there is a Communion, it precedes the commendation, and begins with the Peace. Any of the authorised Eucharistic Prayers may be used.

1. The service may end with a blessing.
