B. A VIGIL SERVICE FOR CANDLEMAS

NOTES

1. This Vigil Service for Candlemas may be used either as a service of preparation for the Feast, or, when the Feast is transferred to the following Sunday as suggested in the Calendar, on the Feast itself.
2. It is appropriate for a Deacon to bring in the light and sing the Acclamation, to proclaim the Gospel, and to lead the Prayers of Intercession.
3. Readings The number of Readings may be varied according to circumstances, but at least three are used before the Gospel Reading.
4. Hymns Places are indicated for these but they may be sung at other points or substituted for the Chants after the Readings.
5. When a procession is made at the end of the service, the candles should be carried to the door and then extinguished.

THE SERVICE OF LIGHT

1	In the darkness, the President introduces the service. The Lord is my light and my salvation The Lord is my light and my salvation The Lord is the strength of my life The Lord is my light and my salvation Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. 2	A minister brings in the light, and says Jesus Christ is the light of the world A light no darkness can quench.
3	While the candles are lit and the light is shared, this hymn is sung. O gladsome light of the holy glory of the immortal Father, Heavenly, holy, blessed Jesus Christ. Now that we have come to the setting of the sun and behold the light of evening, we praise you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. For it is right at all times to worship you    with voices of praise, O Son of God and giver of life. Therefore all the world glorifies you. [1] or O gladsome light, O grace Of God the Father's face, The eternal splendour wearing; Celestial, holy, blest, Our Saviour Jesus Christ, Joyful in thine appearing. Now, ere day fadeth quite, We see the evening light, Our wonted hymn outpouring; Father of might unknown, Thee, his incarnate Son, And Holy Spirit adoring. To thee of right belongs All praise of holy songs, O Son of God, Lifegiver; Thee, therefore, O Most High, The world doth glorify, And shall exalt for ever. [42]
4	When the lights are lit, this ACCLAMATION is made Let us give thanks to the Lord our God He is worthy of all thanksgiving and praise. Blessed are you, Lord our God, king of the universe: To you be glory and praise for ever! For you are our light and our salvation and we your children wait for your loving kindness in the midst of your temple. In your Christ, born of the Virgin Mary, there has sprung up a light for the righteous and joyful gladness for those who are faithful. As we, like Simeon and Anna, welcome him with joy, presented before us as light of all the world, may we be filled with his spirit and made a living temple to the praise and glory of your holy name. And, as we join our praises with theirs, grant us a quiet night and a perfect end now and for ever. Amen.
5	THIS PSALM may be sung. I call to you, O Lord; come to me quickly hear my voice when I cry to you. Let my prayer rise before you as incense. the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord: keep watch over the door of my lips. Let not my heart be turned towards evil: to busy myself with those who do wickedly. Let my prayer rise before you as incense. To you, Lord God, I turn my eyes: I take refuge in you; do not leave me defenceless. 13	The Gospel Reading is introduced by the Minister with this Acclamation. We proclaim not ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord And ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake.
