THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

>

1

The ministers enter in silence.

>

2

All kneel for a time of silent prayer.

> 3

The president stands and says the Collect.

Almighty Father,
look with mercy on this your family
for which our Lord Jesus Christ
was content to be betrayed
and given up into the hands of wicked men
and to suffer death upon the cross;
who is alive and glorified
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING

Isaiah 52.12--53 end TEV

The Lord says,
'My servant will succeed in his task;
he will be highly honoured.
Many people were shocked when they saw him;
he was so disfigured that he hardly looked human.
But now many nations will marvel at him,
and kings will be speechless with amazement.
They will see and understand
something they had never known.'

The people reply,
'Who would have believed what we now report?
Who could have seen the Lord's hand in this?

It was the will of the Lord that his servant
should grow like a plant taking root in dry ground.
He had no dignity or beauty
to make us take notice of him.
There was nothing attractive about him,
nothing that would draw us to him.
We despised him and rejected him;
he endured suffering and pain.
No one would even look at him --
we ignored him as if he were nothing.

But he endured the suffering that should have been ours,
the pain that we should have borne.
All the while we thought that his suffering
was punishment sent by God.
But because of our sins he was wounded,
beaten because of the evil we did.
We are healed by the punishment he suffered,
made whole by the blows he received.
All of us were like sheep that were lost,
each of us going his own way.
But the Lord made the punishment fall on him,
the punishment all of us deserved.

He was treated harshly, but endured it humbly;
he never said a word.
Like a lamb about to be slaughtered,
like a sheep about to be sheared,
he never said a word.
He was arrested and sentenced and led offto die,
and no one cared about his fate.
He was put to death for the sins of our people.
He was placed in a grave with evil men,
he was buried with the rich,
even though he had never committed a crime
or ever told a lie.

The Lord says,
'It was my will that he should suffer;
his death was a sacrifice to bring forgiveness.
And so he will see his descendants;
he will live a long life,
and through him my purpose will succeed.
After a life of suffering, he will again have joy;
he will know that he did not suffer in vain.
My devoted servant, with whom I am pleased,
will bear the punishment of many
and for his sake I will forgive them.
And so I will give him a place of honour,
a place among great and powerful men.
He willingly gave his life
and shared the fate of evil men.
He took the place of many sinners
and prayed that they might be forgiven.'

At the end the reader may say

This is the word of the Lord.

All

Thanks be to God.

Psalm 22.1--22

By his wounds we have been healed.

1 My God my God    why have | you for|saken me:

and from the | words | of my I groaning?
2 My God I cry to you by day but you | do not | answer:

3 But you con|tinue | holy:
you that | are the | praise of | Israel.
4 In you our | fathers | trusted:
they | trusted · and | you de|livered them; R
5 To you they cried and | they were | saved:

7 All those that see me | laugh me · to | scorn:
they shoot out their lips at me and | wag their heads | saying,

let him de|liver him · if | he de|lights in him.' R
9 But you are he that took me | out of · the | womb:
that brought me to lie at | peace · on my | mother's breast.
10 On you have | been cast | since my | birth:
you are my God | even · from my mother's | womb. R
11 O go not from me    for trouble is | hard at | hand:

12 Many | oxen · sur|round me:

13 They gape | wide their | mouths at me:
like | lions · that | roar and | rend.
14 I am poured out like water and all my bones are | out of | joint:
my heart within my | breast · is like melting | wax. R
15 My mouth is dried | up · like a | pot-sherd:

18 I can count | all my | bones:

19 They part my | garments · a|mong them:
and cast | lots | for my | clothing.

NEW TESTAMENT READING (EPISTLE)

Hebrews 4.14-16; 5.7-9 NEB

Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast to the religion we profess. For ours is not a high priest unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who, because of his likeness to us, has been tested every way, only without sin. Let us therefore boldly approach the throne of our gracious God, where we may receive mercy and in his grace find timely help.

In the days of his earthly life Jesus offered up prayers and petitions, with loud cries and tears, to God who was able to deliver him from the grave. Because of his humble submission his prayer was heard: son though he was, he learned obedience in the school of suffering, and, once perfected, became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.

or Hebrews 10.1-25 TEV

The Jewish Law is not a full and faithful model of the real things; it is only a faint outline of the good things to come. The same sacrifices are offered for ever, year after year. How can the Law, then, by means of these sacrifices make perfect the people who come to God? If the people worshipping God had really been purified from their sins, they would not feel guilty of sin any more, and all sacrifices would stop. As it is, however, the sacrifices serve year after year to remind people of their sins. For the blood of bulls and goats can never take away sins.

For this reason, when Christ was about to come into the world, he said to God:
'You do not want sacrifices and offerings,
but you have prepared a body for me.
You are not pleased with animals burnt whole on the altar
or with sacrifices to take away sins.
Then I said, "Here I am, to do your will, O God,
just as it is written of me in the book of the Law."'
First he said, 'You neither want nor are pleased with sacrifices and offerings or with animals burnt on the altar and the sacrifices to take away sins.' He said this even though all these sacrifices are offered according to the Law. Then he said, 'Here I am, O God, to do your will.' So God does away with all the old sacrifices and puts the sacrifice of Christ in their place. Because Jesus Christ did what God wanted him to do, we are all purified from sin by the offering that he made of his own body once and for all.

Every Jewish priest performs his services every day and offers the same sacrifices many times; but these sacrifices can never take away sins. Christ, however, offered one sacrifice for sins, an offering that is effective for ever, and then he sat down at the right-hand side of God. There he now waits until God puts his enemies as a footstool under his feet. With one sacrifice, then, he has made perfect for ever those who are purified from sin.

And the Holy Spirit also gives us his witness.
First he says,
'This is the covenant that I will make with them
in the days to come, says the Lord:
I will put my laws in their hearts
and write them on their minds.'
And then he says, 'I will not remember their sins and evil deeds any longer.' So when these have been forgiven, an offering to take away sins is no longer needed.

We have, then, my brothers, complete freedom to go into the Most Holy Place by means of the death of Jesus. He opened for us a new way, a living way, through the curtain -- that is, through his own body. We have a great priest in charge of the house of God. So let us come near to God with a sincere heart and a sure faith, with hearts that have been purified from a guilty conscience and with bodies washed with clean water. Let us hold on firmly to the hope we profess, because we can trust God to keep his promise. Let us be concerned for one another, to help one another to show love and to do good. Let us not give up the habit of meeting together, as some are doing. Instead, let us encourage one another all the more, since you see that the Day of the Lord is coming nearer.

or Hebrews 10.12-22 TEV

Christ offered one sacrifice for sins, an offering that is effective for ever, and then he sat down at the right-hand side of God. There he now waits until God puts his enemies as a footstool under his feet. With one sacrifice, then, he has made perfect for ever those who are purified from sin.

THE PROCLAMATION OF THE CROSS

11

THE PROCLAMATION OF THE CROSS (sections 12--18) may be used after part C.

12

A wooden cross may be brought into the church and placed in the sight of the people.

13

Appropriate devotions follow which may include any or all of the following, or other suitable hymns or anthems.

14

ANTHEM 1

We glory in your cross, O Lord,
and praise you for your mighty resurrection;
for by virtue of your cross
joy has come into our world.

God be gracious to us and bless us:
and make his face shine upon us,
Let your ways be made known on earth:
your liberating power among all nations.
Let the peoples praise you, O God:
let all the peoples praise you.

We glory in your cross, O Lord,
and praise you for your mighty resurrection;
for by virtue of your cross
joy has come into our world.

15

ANTHEM 2

My people, what wrong have I done to you?
What good have I not done for you?
Listen to me.

1

I am your Creator, Lord of the universe;
I have entrusted this world to you,
but you have created the means to destroy it.

My people, what wrong have I done to you?
What good have I not done for you?
Listen to me.

2

I made you in my image,
but you have degraded body and spirit
and marred the image of your God.
You have deserted me and turned your backs on me.

My people, what wrong have I done to you?
What good have I not done for you?
Listen to me.

3

I filled the earth with all that you need,
so that you might serve and care for one another,
as I have cared for you;
but you have cared only to serve your own wealth and power.

Holy God,
holy and strong,
holy and immortal,
have mercy upon us.

My people, what wrong have I done to you?
What good have I not done for you?
Listen to me.

4

I made my children of one blood
to live in families rejoicing in one another;
but you have embittered the races
and divided the nations.

My people, what wrong have I done to you?
What good have I not done for you?
Listen to me.

5

I commanded you to love your neighbour as yourself,
to love and forgive even your enemies;
but you have made vengeance your rule
and hate your guide.

My people, what wrong have I done to you?
What good have I not done for you?
Listen to me.

6

In the fullness of time I sent you my Son,
that in him you might know me,
and through him find life and peace;
but you put him to death on the cross.

Holy God,
holy and strong,
holy and immortal,
have mercy upon us.

My people, what wrong have I done to you?
What good have I not done for you?
Listen to me.

7

Through the living Christ, I called you into my Church
to be my servants to the world,
but you have grasped at privilege
and forgotten my will.

My people, what wrong have I done to you?
What good have I not done for you?
Listen to me.

8

I have given you a heavenly gift
and a share in the Holy Spirit;
I have given you the spiritual energies
of the age to come;
but you have turned away
and crucified the Son of God afresh.

My people, what wrong have I done to you?
What good have I not done for you?
Listen to me.

9

I have consecrated you in the truth;
I have made you to be one
in the unity of the Father and the Son,
by the power of the Spirit;
but you have divided my Church
and shrouded my truth.

Holy God,
holy and strong,
holy and immortal,
have mercy upon us.

Turn again, my people, listen to me.

Let your bearing to one another
arise out of your life in ChristJesus.
He humbled himself
and in obedience accepted the death of the cross.
But I have bestowed on him
the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus,
every knee should bow
and every tongue confess,
Jesus Christ is Lord.

Turn again, my people, listen to me.

Father, hear our prayer and forgive us.

Unstop our ears
that we may receive the gospel of the cross.
Lighten our eyes
that we may see your glory
in the face of your Son.
Penetrate our minds
that your truth may make us whole.
Irradiate our hearts with your love
that we may love one another for Christ's sake.

Father, forgive us.

16

ANTHEM 3

You are worthy, O Christ, for you were slain;
for by your blood you ransomed men for God:
from every race and language,
from every people and nation,
to make them a kingdom of priests
to stand and serve before our God.

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you,
because by your holy cross you have
redeemed the world.

To him who loves us
and has freed us from our sins by his blood,
and made us a kingdom of priests
to stand and serve before our God;

To him who sits upon the throne and to the Lamb
be praise and honour, glory and might,
for ever and ever. Amen.

17

ANTHEM 4

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you,
because by your holy cross you have
redeemed the world.

Christ was manifested in the body,
vindicated in the spirit,
seen by angels,
proclaimed among the nations,
believed in throughout the world,
glorified in high heaven.

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you,
because by your holy cross you have
redeemed the world.

THE INTERCESSION

>

19

The president introduces the prayers.

God sent his Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Therefore we pray to our heavenly Father for people everywhere according to their needs.

> 20

INTERCESSIONS are led by the president, or by others.
The form below, or the Litany (ASB p.90), or other suitable words may be used.

Let us pray for the Church of God throughout the world--
for unity in faith, in witness, and in service
for bishops and other ministers, and those whom they serve
for our bishop, and people of this diocese
for all Christians in this place
for those to be baptized
for those who are mocked and persecuted for their faith
that God will confirm his Church in faith, increase it in love, and preserve it in peace.

SILENCE

Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.

Almighty and everlasting God,
by whose Spirit the whole body of the Church
is governed and sanctified:
hear our prayer which we offer
for all your faithful people;
that in their vocation and ministry
each may serve you in holiness and truth
to the glory of your Name:
through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Amen.

Let us pray for the nations of the world and their leaders--
for Elizabeth our Queen and the Parliament of this land
for those who administer the law and all who serve in public office
for all who strive for justice and reconciliation
that by God's help the world may live in peace and freedom.

SILENCE

Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.

Most gracious God and Father,
in whose will is our peace:
turn our hearts and the hearts of all to yourself,
that by the power of your Spirit
the peace which is founded on justice
may be established throughout the world;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us pray for God's ancient people, the Jews,
the first to hear his word--
for greater understanding between Christian and Jew
for the removal of our blindness and bitterness of heart
that God will grant us grace to be faithful to his covenant and to grow in the love of his name.

SILENCE

Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.

Lord God of Abraham,
bless the children of your covenant, both Jew and Christian;
take from us all blindness and bitterness of heart,
and hasten the coming of your kingdom,
when Israel shall be saved,
the Gentiles gathered in,
and we shall dwell together in mutual love and peace
under the one God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Let us pray for those who do not believe the Gospel of Christ-
for those who follow other faiths and creeds
for those who have not heard the message of salvation
for all those who have lost faith
for the contemptuous and the scornful
for those who are enemies of Christ
and persecute those who follow him
for all who deny the faith of Christ crucified
that God will open their hearts to the truth and lead them to faith and obedience.

SILENCE

Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.

Merciful God,
creator of all the people of the earth,
have compassion on those who do not know you,
and by the preaching of your Gospel with grace and power,
gather them into the one fold of the one Shepherd,
Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us pray for all who suffer--
for those who are deprived and oppressed
for all who are sick and handicapped
for those in darkness, in doubt and in despair,
in loneliness and fear
for prisoners
for the victims of false accusations and violence
for all at the point of death and those who watch beside them
that God in his mercy will sustain them with the knowledge of his love.

SILENCE

Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.

Almighty and everlasting God,
the comfort of the sad, the strength of those who suffer;
hear the prayers of your children who cry out of any trouble:
and to every distressed soul grant mercy, relief, and refreshment,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Let us commend ourselves and all God's children
to his unfailing love,
and pray for the grace of a holy life,
that, with all who have died in the peace of Christ,
we may come to the fullness of eternal life
and the joy of the resurrection.

Merciful Father,
accept these prayers,
for the sake of your Son,
our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
