Movable Feasts – Notes

  1. Leap Years Leap Years are indicated with the superscript LY.
  2. Sundays of the Epiphany The readings for the four weeks from Epiphany 1 to Epiphany 4 are always used, including on the remaining weekdays beyond 2 February, unless displaced by a feast.
  3. Presentation of Christ, 2 February
    1. The feast of the Presentation may be observed on the nearest Sunday;
    2. Whenever 2 February falls on a Sunday, the readings for the week of Epiphany 4 are used from 3 to 8 February.
  4. Day of Thanksgiving for the Eucharist (Corpus Christi) This feast is observed on the Thursday after Pentecost 1 (Trinity Sunday).
  5. Divine Compassion Where this feast is celebrated, it is observed on the Friday after Pentecost 2.
  6. Weeks A to E The provision for these weeks, pages 412 to 417, is used only as required (see following note). The Sundays take their name in the ordinary course after Pentecost 14. This is to allow for the changing date of Easter, requiring a varying number of Sundays after Pentecost, causing as little loss as possible to the course of scripture reading. However, a feast day falling on a Sunday may replace the propers during this period.
  7. Week F The Sunday between 4 & 10 October is always observed as Week F, page 417, and takes its name in the ordinary course after Pentecost. A feast day falling on a Sunday may replace the propers during this period.
  8. Week Q Twice in twenty-five years (2005 and 2008), when Easter occurs very early resulting in an extra Sunday after Pentecost, the readings for Pentecost 15 should be drawn from the provision in the Simple Celebration (pages 281 to 324) and Pentecost 16 should begin Week A. Users of The Daily Office SSF will receive a Table of Readings on request.
  9. The Kingdom Season Where there are only three Sundays in the Kingdom Season, the provision for the third Sunday of the Kingdom is not used. The relevant years are indicated with the figure B.
  10. Sunday Cycle The Lectionary for Sundays and some (indicated) major feast days is arranged in a three year cycle and begins the previous Advent Sunday.
